What is menorrhagia?;
Menorrhagia, i.e. excessive blood loss during menstruation, is a common problem. Bleeding can be prolonged, lasting 8-10 days each month, a large amount of blood loss leading to anaemia, with blood clots and «flooding», i.e. episodes of sudden and unexpected blood loss often described as «like a tap turning on».
What are the main causes?
Often there is no obvious explanation for the menstrual bleeding and these bleedings are referred to as «dysfunctional uterine bleeding». In young women, menstrual bleeding is most often due to a transient hormonal imbalance, which usually resolves spontaneously. As the woman approaches menopause with your gynecologist, menorrhagia may also in this case be an indication of a hormonal disorder. However, the likelihood of menstruation being due to another cause increases with age. Other causes of menstruation are Fibroids, η endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometrial polyps.
What is the appropriate treatment for immediate management?
Menorrhagia can be treated with different methods ranging from conservative treatment (with hormonal or non-hormonal preparations) to various forms of surgical treatment (endometrial dislocation and hysterectomy).
