Mood swings

What are mood swings?

It is common to experience mood swings during pregnancy, partly due to hormonal changes that affect the levels of neurotransmitters (the brain’s chemical messengers).

What are the main symptoms?

Every woman reacts differently to these changes. Some become emotionally more sensitive to events, whether positive or negative.

Others may feel depressed or anxious. If you experience feelings of sadness or hopelessness and find yourself unable to handle your daily responsibilities, or if you have thoughts that could harm yourself, call your doctor and discuss the possibility of consulting a mental health professional.

What is the appropriate treatment?

It is best to contact your doctor as soon as you notice the first symptoms. Treatment usually depends on the individual case, and your doctor can certainly guide you accordingly.
