Constipation during pregnancy

Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy. This is due to increased progesterone — the hormone that relaxes smooth muscles throughout the body, including the digestive system.

The problem may worsen later in pregnancy as the uterus grows and presses on the intestine. Iron supplements, especially at high doses, can also make constipation worse.
