Embryo cryopreservation

What is embryo cryopreservation?

Many patients are reluctant to freeze their embryos because they are worried that they will not survive with this method. This may have been true some years ago when the slow cryopreservation process was used, but now with modern vitrification, the survival rates of embryos during thawing are usually 100% in specialized facilities.

When a couple has many embryos, they are willing to freeze some of them. He realizes what can't be done embryo transfer of all the embryos at the same time, so she chooses to preserve the extra embryos she has. Of course, the truth is, freezing is even more important for women who have a limited number of embryos, even those who may only have one.

When the embryos are few, each one is precious. Each high-quality embryo has the potential to develop into a healthy baby if transferred and implanted in a receptive endometrium.

In each new IVF cycle we focus on helping you produce lots of eggs and that's why we create hyperstimulation with hormonal injections. But while the endometrium may appear excellent, its receptivity can often be dreaded due to high estrogen levels.

The endometrium may show on a vaginal ultrasound scan that it has developed and is thick enough, but in some cases it may not be potentially capable of allowing implantation. So even if we put a top quality embryo in that endometrium, it probably has a reduced chance of implantation.

That's why it's often an option to freeze all your embryos - even when you have 1 or 2. If they are of good quality, there is a certainty that they will survive and there is no risk.

The embryos can be transferred to the next cycle, during which we will focus on preparing the endometrium for optimal receptivity. This combined technique is the best method for these precious embryos to have a better chance of implanting and delivering a healthy baby.

The option of cryopreservation of all embryos is a standard treatment protocol offered worldwide and we offer it to our patients without reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is embryo cryopreservation?

Η embryo cryopreservation is a common method of fertility preservation. It is essentially a process where embryos are frozen at very low temperatures to preserve them for future use.

  • Egg collection from the woman
  • Fertilisation of eggs in the laboratory to create embryos.
  • Freezing of embryos
  • Storage of embryos in specialised conditions

Η embryo cryopreservation agreed with the couple for a period not exceeding 5 years. Consent is allowed for persons aged 15 years and over. According to Greek law, if there are enough quality embryos available, the couple should not proceed to a new cycle of IVF before using the cryopreserved embryos.
