9 + 1 Pregnancy Symptoms Before a Missed Period

Breast tenderness and swelling

One of the most common and earliest symptoms of pregnancy is breast tenderness and soreness, caused by the sudden increase in hormone levels. The pain may feel similar to the soreness you experience before your period. You may also notice that your breasts feel larger and heavier from the first weeks of pregnancy.

Nausea with or without vomiting

Morning sickness usually begins about three weeks after conception. Pregnant women may also find that certain smells that never bothered them before now trigger nausea.

Increased urination

Frequent urination appears within the very first days after conception. This happens because, during pregnancy, the amount of blood and other bodily fluids increases sharply, leading to increased flow through the kidneys and into the bladder.

Fatigue & Drowsiness

One of the first signs you may notice in the early weeks of pregnancy is fatigue. During early pregnancy, levels of the hormone progesterone rise dramatically, which can make you feel unusually sleepy.

Food aversions and increased cravings

Many women report that one of the earliest signs of pregnancy is a strong aversion to certain foods and sudden cravings for others. This may be caused by the rise in hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), the pregnancy hormone produced after the fertilized egg implants.

Light bleeding

Sometimes, a small amount of vaginal bleeding is one of the first signs of pregnancy. Known as “implantation bleeding,” this occurs when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall, about 10 to 14 days after conception. This bleeding is usually brief and occurs around the time of your expected period. For this reason, many women do not realize they are pregnant and simply assume they had a very light period.

Strange taste in the mouth

In the early days of pregnancy, you may notice a strange metallic taste. Some women may suddenly develop an aversion to something familiar and routine, such as tea or coffee.

Headache

A persistent headache lasting more than two or three hours may be a sign that you are pregnant. In early pregnancy, hormonal changes cause increased blood circulation, which can, in turn, trigger headaches.

Uterine cramps

Some women experience mild uterine cramps early in pregnancy.

Mood changes

Your mood may change from one moment to the next. This happens to most women during pregnancy due to hormonal fluctuations.
